Blue Energy Wind Tower (BEWiT) is another innovation by Blue Energy Australia. This type of vertical tower can overcome many problem in existing vertical wind energy design. Being vertical shaft, it makes assembly very easy. Most importantly the wind energy harvesting efficiency will be doubled because this type of design will not have bias wind energy drag. It will also present an elegant appearance, low noise, prevention of injury to birds

There are a few features make BEWiT standing out against any other wind energy technologies.

Design:

There is a very important efficiency issue in between Horizontal Axis Wind Tower (HAWT) and Vertical Axis Wind Tower (VAWT). For horizontal axis, all the blades create unique torque that is a combined force to turn the electrical generator in one direction. For vertical axis, the torque is the result of a bigger torque force overcome the smaller torque force, which is less efficient than the vertical axis configuration. This is because in VAWT, half of the sweep area will work against the other half, makes the overall efficiency in general less than 1/3 it should be.

But one advantage for horizontal shaft wind tower is the potential of going higher with modular structure. For example, you can make a simple module of 2 meter in diameter, 10 meter high. By adding 10 modules, it will be 100 meters high. This is impossible to achieve by HAWT.

Land use:

When you have a land space at your title, the sky is the limit. So you can build a high rise wind tower at your backyard or in the front yard, which has to have the permission of bureaucratic departments such as local council and legal entity, and of course your neighbor. You might keep on add more modules to raise its height in order to tap into more energy daily. It is a long term investment at your pace and affordability. To build a high rise wind tower will allow you access higher altitude where wind energy is more stable and strong because the friction on land will have less drag on wind energy

Transmission of wind energy:

It is obvious that to build a wind tower in human habitat will have less cost initially due to connection distance. To make it a permanent building feature of an urban/rural household will offset energy cost in the long run. The challenge is to have such wind energy harvesting instrument less disruption to residents in many aspects such as visual, acoustic and safety to resident and wildlife. Conventional wind tower with turbine blades will not pass such requirement. Using high rise wind tower like BEWiT will easily overcome these challenge.

Energy storage:

Purely transmitting electricity is highly unlikely to fulfill energy efficiency not just in theory but in reality of wind energy business. Wind farm in some case causes electricity network being unstable due to energy source - wind, is an intermittent energy.

To have multiple energy storage solutions in an energy hub will eliminate such problem. Bare in mind that REC in Australia takes solar heat pump device as renewable energy equipment. So a wind tower in a household can also store energy with heat pump, which can be used for resident hot water usage, or to generate electricity using BETE. Other configuration of energy storage will be compressed air(CA) on site for long term energy storage. At high pressure, CA is far more superior than hot water and battery because CA will not subject to energy dissipation like heat pump or battery. Its energy density is also reasonably. For example, at room temperature, without the heat pump, a 200 liters CA container will have 2KWh of energy at 200 bars. With heat pump storage of 40 liters capacity, when its water temperature is about 100 degrees, the energy will be nearly triple.

But the best and superior way to store energy is in fact to use CO2 and Hydrogen to create methane, which is well known as Sabatier reaction. This solution would be the best way to sequestrate CO2 emission and energy storage for intermittent energy such as wind.

I am strongly against large scale energy storage using battery. Large or small scale is a relative term against its energy users. Battery is environmentally harmful and most importantly the energy density by battery is simply pathetically low. Using battery is slow in storing energy (battery charging) and very costly. One example is that a pilot battery bank project in China cost half billion dollars, which is only capable to store 15 minuets of electricity at rated capacity.

Mass production:

Cost can be greatly reduced if there is mass market for a product. Due to BEWiT can be installed close to residential area, the annual demand can be in ten of millions units for product modules, which will in return makes it very competitive and affordable. This can be an efficiency advantage for manufacturers who will streamline production efficiency once the demand is high.
